Montana Library Association Conference
last week, I had a wonderful visit to Great Falls Montana for the Montana Library Association Annual Conference. They were remarkably hospitable! We even played Jeopardy and I was auctioned off for charity in the game. I toured the new university library and we went to a club where mermaids were swimming in a tank too. Lots of fun. Real image busters for libraries and Montana!
Anyway, while there I gave two sessions that were roughly the same (same slides - maybe different words). Here's the talk:

Another visit in California was to the SLA San Andreas & San Francisco Bay Area Chapters. It was a real nice dinner on the Stamford Campus and then they had to listen to me. It was a treat that SLA CEO Janice Lachance made it there too. Here are the PPTs:

Arkansas Library Association
I visited Arkansas (Little Rock and Hot Srpings) for the first time to speak at their annual conference. It was fun and I saw some interesting things on tours that the hosts were nice enough to take me on. (Even including the Clinton Presidential Library and the house from TV's Designing Women as well as Macarthur Park of the song fame - cool).

ALA Empowerment Conference
In DC this June ALA ran an Empowerment Conference for library staff. It was pretty interesting to see the great skills and energy of this group.
Joe Janes from the U Washington iSchool and I did a session on trends. We had a severely dead PC projector so we went naked and went without our PowerPoints. I think we did well.

ALCTS at ALA
I was honored to give the end note at the ALA ALCTS 50th anniversary pre-conference workshop.
It was a very innovative format with speakers and reactors and an end of day panel that reacted to the whole day. Entertaining and educational. The organizers did a great job (and great food in the Reagan Building too).

ALA Public Relations Session
I had great fun getting up early in the morning on Sunday at ALA in DC.
I'd been asked by the ALA PR committee to do a 2 hour program about innovative PR so I chose to highlight recent technology innovations that libraries could use to enhance their PR activities.

DigitalNow Association 2.0
I got the opportunity to do one of the keynotes at the DigitalNow Conference in Florida about Association 2.0. It was great to see so many association executives there (and a lot of library ones too) talking about the future. The CPA's had an amazing Second Life presence! So did the American Cancer Society!

LIANZA in Wellington NZ
If you ever get a chance to go to the LIANZA conference in New Zealand. Accept without hesitation. It is wonderful. They treat you like royalty and it's great fun and educational too.

The Idaho Library Association Conference in Pullman was winderful. I even bought stuff at the fun auction. I did two talks: the keynote on "Find the Future: Libraty in 2010 which is posted here and a session on Library 2.0 which is posted here.

IFLA Unicode Panel

My first trip to Wisconsin
I had a great trip to keynote WiLSWorld in Madison Wisconsin. A very interesting conference and lots of good stuff happening there. I even got to visit with a few SLA WI Chapter members too!
Anyway, here's a link to the PPT. This speech was called "Growing Up in a Google and 2.0 World".
I especially liked the Hawai'ian Shirt theme. Beats a tie and suit jacket any day! Congratulations to Barbara Arnold for winning the ugliest shirt award. Rochelle of Tinfoil and Racoon has built a little Flickr meme on it.
It's nice to see a conference where the fun is built in. Sometimes we're just too serious.

Idaho Vision 2020
Wow!! What a conference!
The Idaho Commission for Libraries (State Library) hosted a conference on Digital Natives for two days in Boise in July. Speakers included Sarah Houghton, Aaron Schmidt, Alane Wilson and me.
They videotaped most of the conference so I'll provide a link when that goes up.

I am also looking forward to seeing the streaming video of the panel interviews I did with a great crew of millennials. Very interesting. It was blogged here, here , here, here, and here.

Minnesota Reference Conference
First, here's the link to the PPT for the keynote I did for Minnesota about Reference 2010. This is just the PPT. Scarily, for me, they also videotaped the session and posted the video and slides in a very neat way. So, here's a place below where you can view it (and know that I hate to watch myself so haven't viewed the whole thing.)

IFLA News Section
I visited Salt Lake City for the first time and spoke to the IFLA News Section about "Thinking Ahead: News 2.0". Here's a link to the PPT. The University of Utah had great facilities and the challenges facing 'news' and archiving and repositories are great fodder for great minds.

CASLIS/GELA Edmonton Presentation

SLA Leadership and Management Division
It was the SLA LMD Division's 30th anniversary this conference in Baltimore. I am a past chair of the division and I was really honoured to be asked to present the luncheon keynote to help celebrate this milestone. Here's a link to the PPT. A session at SLA was devoted to major initiatives in recruiting and retaining library pros. I covered the 8R's work with this PPT and the other half of the session covered the IMLS study progress.
This is a serious issue and it's great to see effort being sustained to study it and actually undertake action to address the issue.

CLA and the 8R's
We had a great panel updating the CLA conference attendees on the progress of the CLA President's Task Force on the 8R's.

Here's a link to the Info-Nation website which is launching very soon. Essentially, Info*Nation is CLA's attempt to recruit some new blood to the information professions. (By "professions," we are talking broadly about all people whose "profession" – vocation, calling, employment – is working in libraries; not just librarians with too many degrees.) We want to emphasize the diverse elements of library work and break down some of the stereotypes associated with libraries. At the same time we want to recruit personnel that continue to be committed to the core values of libraries (public service, learning, literacy, access to information, regular coffee breaks, etc.). Besides, at some point a whole bunch of senior librarians and library technicians are going to retire and it would be nice to have one or two competent individuals to fill the void. It's edgy and done a little diferently than the traditional library careers pages. Keep your eyes pealed.

CLA Web 2.0 Session
I had a great time in Ottawa at the Canadian Library Association Conference. This posting links to my presentation about Web 2.0, Library 2.0 and Librarian 2.0.
The second annual technology track at CLA seemed to be a great success. Despite having to move the whole conference due to a potential strike situation everything ran pretty smoothly. Of course I don't envy the CLA staff and conference team who essentially had to plan all of the conference logistics twice!

DigitalNow
I got the opportunity to speak to a wide range of association executives (including a bunch of good library association folks) at DigitalFusion's ASAE DigitalNow Conference. It was a great way to spend a weekend in Disney World at the end of a long winter. I highly recommend the new Animal Kingdom where I spent a while communing with nature, Disney style - which might be as close to real life as the web is, but it was still fun.

Texas Library Association
This conference is huge! It's also very well organized and incredibly hospitable. I loved it. And, OMG if I can be permitted a little star worship, I got to see Julie Andrews and Rhea Perlman up close and personal.
I also got to give two presenations. The one on Millennials is here and the one "Poppies, Flyig Monkeys and Good Witches" is here (It's really a trend forcast).
Either way, TxLA is fun.

College Library Director Forecast

Taiwan National Library
While I was in Taiwan I decided to stay another day and tour the place. What an amazing place! I saw the national museum, 101, temples, night markets and loads of great stuff all courtesy of my SirsiDynix colleague, James Loh. Thanks again James.
Also, after my session on the road show a group of librarians in Taiwan from the all over asked me if I would do another presentation on Sunday morning about Web 2.0, Library 2.0, Librarian 2.0. My article on this topics had been translated into Chinese. I was glad to do it and I also got a great tour of the amazing National Library of Taiwan. It was a very cool (and busy) place. Thanks for the opportunity!

ASIDIC Presentation

It's called "Who's Afraid of the Google Wolf?" It was a very interesting conference in Sanibel Florida on Mar. 12, 2006 - such a hardship! This multi-type association has technology, publisher, vendor, consortia and library members meeting twice annually.
