Google Book Search

I was talking with a friend today and said friend made an astute observation. Since Google are apparently laying off 10,000 contract employees as well as recruiters etc., the both of us wondered what projects they were from.

It seems likely to us that the only project that would use such a big chunk of temporary and contract workers would be the Google book scanning project for Google Book Search.

This is just total speculation but wouldn't this delay the timeline of getting all those libraries digitized?

Today the Official Google Blog noted that "85% of our employees have at least some stock options that are underwater" so they've made a plan to keep those folks who remain.

Seems everyone is impacted - even the big guys.
