Dealing with Technology Objections

David Warlick from 2 Cents Worth and an international leader in education visited London Ontario last week. In one of his blog postings from the event he listed comments he has heard from educators and challenged them. I often say in my sessions that there is a big difference between an excuse and a reason. I think that this list and his comments are excellent. If you can reframe your ojections as reasons or requests for further iformation you can deal with them as a process. If you see them as excuses they form barriers and you're blocked. What also worries me is that when I ask library staff to describe the situation where many of the excuses listed below are happening very feww, in fact almost none, can actualy say they were there. It seems that they have reached urban legend status in some boards and aren't being addressed systemically on a managerial level people to people. Interesting.

So Now What Do We Do?

Comment 1: “Our IT department won’t let us!”

Comment 2: “My superintendent doesn’t get it.”

Comment 3: “We don’t have enough money.”

Comment 4: “Our computers are too old.”

Comment 5: “The school networks are out of date.”

Comment 6: “We still ban cell phones in school!”

Comment 7: “I’ve never even heard of RSS.”

Comment 8: “The kids know more than we do.”

Comment 9: “I don’t have the time!”

Anyway, read the original post.
