Google in 2001

Apparently the oldest remaining index for Google is from 2001. For their tenth aniversary they have recreated that website here.

It is a little different in look and feel but it's still very interesting. Try it. What were search results like that long ago? What were the issues? Ads? It mustn't be the complete 2001 index (try searching Al Qaida, 911, World Trade Center, etc.)

Things change so gradually we often don't actually notice how much they've changed.

Well, since the illustration above says "Google in January 2001," I guess I wouldn't expect it to cover "911" (except as an emergency phone number) or "World Trade Center" (except as some tall buildings). Google's good, but not THAT good.

Ooops. I missed the month!
I am soooo bad at detail (grin).

Well, it might be because you didn't spell it correctly (Al Qaeda) and I think that little, helpful "did you mean..." wasn't around then.

Naw, It was because it was just January 2001. I used the 7-8 different spellings of Al Queda since it's not actually originally spelled with a western alphabet. Same problem with Qaddafi/Khaddafy, etc. Those old librarian sklls never leave ya but as I get older I miss little details like scope (grin).
