I'm still standing
A few folks are asking why I've been quiet on the blog. Nothing major - just very busy.
I spent the last few days at ALA Midwinter. It was fun but a little worrisome. I was there for at least two meetings where there were discussions (started by some pretty well known librarians) that began with assertions to kill / murder all vendors! I certainly worry when the discussions get this low and appalling. I never find using genocide or causing a holocaust for humour or to make a point very offensive. Then again, I think most people do. I was disappointed in the tenor of the debate on key issues where blamestorming seemed to rule. I was hopeful we could move beyond that.
And, I am preparing for the SLA Leadership Summit and Board meetings in Louisville Kentucky next week. I became President of SLA on January 1st. I am really looking forward to making a few exciting announcements! And seeing the SLA leaders for '08.
Also, I am fighting off a bad case of Shingles. I went to the doctor today for what I thought was hives or a rash and was told it was shngles. It hurts a lot and has affected half my face and yuckily entered my tongue, inner ear (ouch) and lips. Arrghhh!
Postings will start again soon.
Stephen

G'day Stephen. Really sorry to hear about the shingles. Please try to rest up for a few weeks and go at half your normal speed (which would make it just twice the speed of regular folk).
As for the "kill the vendors" ....if people were talking like that while you were in the room, one can only imagine what they are saying behind your back.... **ouch**

I'm sorry I'm going to miss the SLA Leadership Summit this year - I'm on the board, but can't get the time off of work. I hope to see your exciting announcements posted somewhere so that I don't miss out completely :)

I find the hateful talk about vendors to be really depressing too and definitely holds us back from good librarian-vendor relationships.
I hope you feel better soon! Get lots of rest; the blogosphere will be here when you're well again.

Stephen,
OUCH on the shingles! My mom described that feeling as an internal icepick, with no rhyme or reason, occasionally being stabbed from the inside.
I am hunting something. At the PA Library conf. in Oct., in your PPT presentation, there was a video clip. Bunch of students in a college auditorium type setting, talking about, I believe, the future of learning. They held up cards? I cannot find it on your site, I apologize if it's here. It MIGHT have been a sociology class?
Any help or a link?
