Joost
I wish I had more time. Soon!
Everyone is playing with Joost and it looks really cool.
"The new way of watching TV
All the things you love about TV, fused with the interactive power of the internet – just the way you want it. Enjoy the ride!"
Another 2.0 thing to spend 15 minutes a day understanding and thinking about the implications for library users.
DVD is dead. Long live streaming.

I still think we're a few years away from the death of the DVD. I've read a few newspaper articles this year that report cable companies using their acceptable use policy to suspend high speed internet service to customers who use a lot of bandwidth.
How much bandwidth does Joost consume? I found this on their FAQ: Using the Client page. "In one hour of viewing, approximately 320Mb data will be downloaded and 105Mb uploaded, which means that it will exhaust a 1Gb cap in 10 hours."

"DVD is dead"? Just like that? Because of a not-yet-in-production streaming service? Wow.
Now now Walt. You can still watch your huge DVD collection. It's just not going to survive as a market dominant format very long just like vinyl, 8-Track and Cassettes haven't. Try to buy anything new in those formats and look at how the format window is shrinking. For music CD stll exists but more is sold or acquired online than in that format. As for Beta and VHS they mostly don't get released anymore except late or for the seniors market. So DVD still survives, temporarily. Download speeds outside of NA are better and have resulted in more being acquired through streaming media than DVD. Of course I am not saying Joost is the cause but the plethora of streaming media servers and services is. My family buys, views and acquires more through the streaming way than buying DVD. And I know hundreds more who do the same. (and it's all done legally)
Any library that's not experimenting with streaming is being foolhardy or ostriching. It's not a difficult or expensive experiment to understand and believing that DVD will survive as the dominant format well into the future is naieve. The barriers will fall more quickly than many expect.

Stephen, I'm usually under the same map pushpin as you are, but I read this post and felt, "Dude needs to get off the road and stay home a while." I'm not running out to cancel my Netflix subscription. Sure, streaming will happen, I'm guessing, yet DVD is far from dead.
Also, "Everyone"? I'm also not playing with Joost and I'm doing just fine. Will I look at it? Uh... yeah... RSN... after I get SL working and explore some other streaming technologies I'm trying to grok and, by the way, make a living. It's important for information specialists to look at new technologies and it's certainly on my radar scope... but on my 5/3/1 model, it's still a 5, which means unless I see a flag that tells me Joost is the next big thing, it's gonna have to wait.
